Cannon says Portumna-based website offers unique memorial space
Press Statement: 30th January 2018

Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development Ciaran Cannon has said that a new memorial website created in Portumna offers a unique space for people to remember loved ones who have died.

Minister Cannon said ‘One of the most significant factors in helping a person deal with bereavement is the presence and solidarity of family and friends. There is also the added factor that while one may have visitors in the days and weeks immediately following the passing a relative, life inevitably goes on and eventually the calling stops. To that end, I commend the creators of the new memorial website, Eternally Irish, which not only offers the opportunity for family and friends to create a unique online space to share their memories of a loved one who has died, but also helps people know that their relative was valued as a person. Created by Tony Williams, the proprietor of Dignity Funeral Homes, who is based in Portumna, Eternally Irish is an easy-to-navigate website that allows the bereaved to easily and quickly create a memorial for their loved one, and invite people to come together in sympathy for their loss and in celebration of their loved one’s life. Significantly, it gives Irish diaspora from around the globe another chance to remain in contact with their home places and contribute their own memories of individuals who they knew.

This is a wonderfully executed and unique concept which will surely help build a greater sense of community and solidarity amongst our global Irish. I wish the project well and hope it will bring some comfort to those whose loved ones are commemorated’.
